Docking Station No Longer Recognizes Device(s)

Problem

The USB ports on my Surface Laptop docking station are not working. The docking station is providing power to the Surface Laptop but nothing happens when I plug anything into any of the USB ports. They had been previously working.

Solution

First, you will want to make sure that your Laptop is completely up-to-date. Refer to this KB (Check for/Update your computer (Windows Updates) - Jira Service Management (atlassian.net)) on how to do so.

 

If that does not fix it, follow the steps below;

  1. Remove all cables and dongles from Surface Dock.

  2. Unplug Surface Dock from Laptop.

  3. Shutdown Laptop.

  4. Press and hold Power Button for 20-30 secs. Startup screen will go black and stop starting up.

  5. Plug all cables/dongles back into your Surface Dock.

  6. Plug Surface Dock back into your Laptop.

  7. Press Power Button on Laptop for standard start up.
