IT Security Recommendations when Traveling

It is important to keep in mind security measures when traveling. Here is a list of traveling recommendations from when traveling.

Recommendations:

Before you go:

  1. Update your mobile software. 
  2. Back up your information.
  3. Use strong PINs and passwords to lock your devices. 


While Traveling:

  1. Keep an eye on your devices at all times –including any USB or external storage devices.
    1. Make sure that you have them in your carry-on bag. 
  2. Make sure to lock your device when you are not using it. 
  3. Use phone hotspot or company provided hotspot to avoid connecting to public networks. Using your mobile network connection is generally more secure than using a public wireless network.
  4. Avoid connecting to public networks (such as airport, coffee places, airplanes, restaurants) becuase they are insecure and can allow cyber criminals access to your Internet-enabled devices.
  5. Use a virtual private network (VPN).
  6. Do not login to public computers (such as hotel business centers, libraries, and cyber cafes).
  7. Be sure to confirm the name of the network and exact login procedures with appropriate staff to ensure that the network is legitimate. 
  8. Do not conduct sensitive activities, such as online shopping, banking, or sensitive work, using a public wireless network. 
  9. Only use sites that begin with “https://” when online shopping or banking.
  10. Use caution when downloading or clicking on any unknown links.
